Proof of residence within the Newlands College home zone will be required.
1.3 Each year, applications for enrolment in the following year from in-zone students will be sought by a date which will be published in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school. This will enable the Board to assess the number of places which can be made available to students who live outside the home zone.
2. OUT OF ZONE ENROLMENTS
2.1 Each year the Board will determine the number of places if any, which are likely to be available in the following year for the enrolment of students who live outside the home zone. The Board will publish this information by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school. The notice will indicate how applications are to be made and will specify a date by which all applications must be received.
2.2 Applications for enrolment will be processed in the following order of priority:
- First Priority will be given to students who have been accepted into a "special programme".
Currently Newlands College has no "special programmes".
NEXT ORDER OF PRIORITY
The second to sixth order priorities will be in accordance with s11F of the Education Act 1989. Note that while the priority order here is sequential any ballot is independent of any Priority One ballot, e.g. an out-of-zone student may be successful as a Priority Two to Five student, even if no ballot took place for Priority One students because the Learning Support Centre lacked capacity.
- Second Priority will be given to applicants who are siblings of current students.
- Third Priority will be given to applicants who are siblings of former students.
- Fourth Priority will be given to applicants who are children of former students of the school.
- Fifth Priority will be given to applicants who are either children of board employees or children of a member of the board.
- Sixth Priority will be given to all other applicants.
2.3 If there are more applicants in the second, third, fourth, fifth or sixth priority groups than there are places available, selection within the priority group will be by a ballot conducted in accordance with instructions issued by the Secretary under Section 11G(1) of the Education Act 1989. Parents will be informed of the date of any ballot by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school.
2.4 Applicants seeking second or third priority status will be required to give proof of a sibling relationship, preferably by means of the appropriate birth certificates.
1) The Secretary for Education has approved as a "Special Programme" any class or unit established by the school for which students are accepted on the basis of special educational needs arising from learning and behaviour difficulties, sensory, intellectual, communication or physical disabilities, or any combination of these.
