Newlands College is a state, co-educational, decile 9, uniformed school in the northern suburbs of Wellington that caters for Year 9 to Year 13 students. The college has a safe, caring and supportive environment with a reputation for striving for excellence for all individuals. It currently has a roll of 920 which is managed by an enrolment scheme, and given the number of students in its contributing schools and the nearby subdivision development, this is expected to grow. The College also runs a very strong international student programme.
The College performs very well academically. NCEA and University Entrance Results compare extremely favourably with the National data both is terms of overall pass rates (sometimes in excess of 90%) and also the achievement of Merit and Excellence Endorsements. The College also has a Learning Support Centre which caters for the education of ORS students.
The nearly 50 year old College has modern learning facilities. In 2017, a floodlight all weather turf with six netball courts was laid and current projects include rebuilding the library, the staffroom and further upgrades to the Technology area.
The College, through its E-Learning platform in the past few years, has required students at all year levels, to ‘bring their own device’. This tool is one of our main means of delivering the curriculum. Recently, one of our significant changes to the curriculum has been the timetabling of Wa Ako with an Active Learning component. All staff are timetabled into this programme, and Active Learning allows students to pursue a project or interest during this time.
Co-curricular activity is an important part of Newlands College. A wide range of activities in the Arts, Music, Drama, Leadership, and Sports are provided. These are comprehensively described further on our website.
Our College highly values the safety and well-being of its students. It has an extremely strong guidance network and practices of students are welcomed and supported.
