There are code convenors who are in charge of each sport. Please get in touch with them if you have any questions. The teacher in charge of your chosen sports will contact you directly with more detailed information regarding trials and training.
Sports that are played in a weekly College Sport Wellington competition will be played either on our school facilities (gym or field) or at other school gyms/fields.
Keen athletes will have the opportunity to attend the CSW Athletics Qualifiers event. If successful, students may progress to regionals and then the North Island Championship.

In 2026 the College will continue to work with Wellington North Badminton to provide a comprehensive coaching programme for students to develop their skills. Teams are made up of 4-6 players.
In 2025 we had 30 Badminton teams that competed in the weekly competitions. Most years we have teams that qualify for the regional finals. We aim to send our Premier teams to the National Secondary School Badminton tournament held during Winter Tournament week.

Basketball is one of the fastest growing sports in New Zealand, and this is no exception at Newlands College, with large numbers of boys’ and girls’ teams entered in both the College Sport competition (played home and away) and the Junior Social League (an internal competition played at Newlands College).

Bowls at Newlands has grown a lot over recent years with good numbers of students involved in the weekly competitions and tournaments. Leo Rennwandt (Year 10 student) won the CSW Bowler of the Year in 2025.

Games start at the very beginning of Term 1. The 1st XI play 50 overs a side in Premier 2, one-day games. All other teams play 40 overs or in the T20 grade. A highlight in 2025 was taking a Junior side to the Lower North Island Cricket tournament in Term 4.

Our Cross Country squad is made up of middle distance runners. We encourage students from other sports who are keen on being fit to get involved in our programme. Middle distance athletes are encouraged to participate in Cross Country competitions in Term 2 and 3. Newlands College students compete in local and national competitions; you make great friends and get to see different parts of Wellington.
In races students can enter as individuals or in teams. Race distances are generally 2–4km. By registering to this sport you are not committing to all of the events. Most of our squad belong to the local harrier club. There is an expectation that you are doing your own regular training.

Once or twice a week. Students are also encouraged to join a club. Most of our students are in the Olympic Harriers running club.
Newlands College has a rich history dragonboating in Wellington Harbour. Our teams have medalled at each of the last 4 years of Secondary School Nationals and are looking forward to another awesome season out on the water. Open to returning and new paddlers; we have 3 teams and this year we will be launching our new race shirts!

Transport to Whairepo Lagoon is provided in the cost. Students make their own way home from the city after training.
We have a small but dedicated team of Equestrians here at Newlands College, lucky to have strong Whānau support. We take part in interschools events such as Solway Dressage and in 2025 attended the Secondary Schools Pony Club Championships at the National Equestrian Centre in Taupō. We are excited to keep building momentum for this sport at Newlands College and look forward to more opportunities to be out in 2026.

The school currently runs 8 teams. A highlight of 2025 was our 1st XI Boys team qualifying for the Premier grade, making history for our school, and our Girls 1st XI placing 5th in Premier 2 and looking to build in the 2026 season. Both our 1st XI Boys & Girls teams competed in the NZSS Winter Tournament week and plan to do so again in 2026.
Term 2 and 3
Futsal is the fastest growing team sport in schools in New Zealand. In Term 1 and Term 4 boys and girls teams will be entered in the Futsal leagues held at Akau Tangi, Kilbirnie or Te Rauparaha Arena, Porirua. This competition provides an excellent opportunity to improve football skills and fitness in preparation for the winter season.

In 2025, we had 2 Boys & 1 Girls team. Highlights included our Boys team moving into the Premier 2 Grade and attending Winter Tournament, and our Girls team finishing strong, fundraising for next year’s Winter Tournament. We also had a junior boys team again this year collaborating with several other local schools to provide more game time for our junior players.

Ki O Rahi numbers increased significantly in 2025 thanks to the support from Pita and Vanessa Mill. We had a mixed team for both our Senior and Junior sides for the CSW Junior and Senior Tournaments. A highlight of 2025 was that our Junior Ki o Rahi team won the CSW Junior tournament.

Netball is a strong sport at the college with 14 teams last year and many of them making their grade finals. Games are at the Akau Tangi Sports Centre or Hataitai courts depending on the grade.
In 2026, the number of teams available will be subject to the number of coaches/managers we have as volunteers. Teams will need to provide their own coach, manager and umpire for the 2026 season.

Orienteering is a competitive sport requiring participants to navigate themselves through a course by visiting each checkpoint, known as a control, in the correct order using a specially drawn map. It combines cross country running with navigation skills. The competitor who correctly completes the course in the fastest time will be the winner.
Orienteering is arranged so that the most basic skills are taught first and once mastered progression to the next step takes place. Beginners and their families are always welcome at all events run by Orienteering Wellington and Orienteering Hutt Valley, and help is always on hand for newcomers.
In 2026 there are a number of events planned for Wellington schools. These are held on Sundays, approximately every two weeks from February 12 – TBC.

CSW Sprint Series: Sprint distance (shorter, urban) series – a good chance for new orienteers to have a go at orienteering in an urban environment on Wednesday evenings, with some trickier courses to challenge the more experienced orienteers. Start times from 6pm–7pm.
CSW Orienteering series: Traditional orienteering events held in parks around the greater Wellington region on Sundays from 11am–1pm. These events provide an opportunity for students new to orienteering to experience non-urban events and learn how to orienteer, while providing a challenge to experienced orienteers.

Here at Newlands College, we provide opportunities for all rugby players to play our national game. We aim to field a Junior and a Senior boys side each year, with players unable to fit into these sides given the opportunity to play for a neighbouring school. We also look to enter 7’s sides into the summer regional tournament.

Newlands has one of the biggest Table Tennis squads in Wellington and has been very successful over the last few years. Interested players can enter into a weekly league and also play in the individual and team championships.

Volleyball is a sport on the rise at the college with large numbers of students keen to play at junior and senior level. In 2025, we had a total of 18 Volleyball teams that competed in the College Sport Wellington competition. Our top Junior and Senior teams will have an opportunity to play in the CSW Regional Tournament and North Island Satellite Tournaments.
