Sports Policy

Our Newlands College sport policy and associated procedures operate in accordance with the School Sport NZ Integrity Framework, Code of Conduct and Disputes Procedures.

Newlands College recognises sport as an integral part of school life and a valuable contributor to students’ wellbeing, development and sense of belonging.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Principal has overall responsibility for the strategic oversight and governance of sport, and delegates the operational management of sport to the Director of Sport and relevant staff. The Director of Sport oversees the development, coordination and delivery of extracurricular sport and active recreation programmes, and has discretion over financial matters relating to sport, including fees and refunds.

Coaches, managers and volunteers must uphold the values and expectations of Newlands College with procedures in place to support positive and high-quality experiences for students. They are also expected to maintain fair and transparent processes for team selection and participation. We reserve the right to review, renew or discontinue coaching and volunteer appointments where appropriate.

Student Expectations and Conduct

Students representing Newlands College in sport and active recreation programmes must demonstrate behaviour consistent with the values and expectations of Newlands College. Inappropriate behaviour may result in disciplinary action, including suspension from or removal from sporting participation.

Health and Safety and Wellbeing

Newlands College is committed to providing a safe sporting environment for students, staff and volunteers. See Health, Safety and Welfare Policy and EOTC Policy.

Appropriate procedures are in place to support injury reporting and management, return-to-play processes following significant injury, student supervision during sporting activities and trips, and the effective management of risks associated with sporting events.

Communication and Social Media

We expect all communication and social media engagement connected to sports to:

  • Reflect the values of Newlands College
  • Promote respectful and appropriate interaction.
  • Comply with Newlands College expectations regarding digital communication and
    online behaviour.
