The Newlands College Music Department is a vibrant, inclusive community where students are encouraged to find their unique musical voice. From beginners picking up a new instrument to advanced musicians refining their craft, there is a stage for everyone.

Co-Curricular Ensembles & Performance

Our co-curricular program is built on variety and excellence. We offer a wide range of groups that rehearse weekly and perform in the wider community and at our major annual showcases: Songs, Scenes & Sketches and Spring Serenade.

Community & Motu: Students gain real-world experience performing at events across Wellington and throughout the country.

Instrumental & Vocal Tuition

We offer professional, subsidised lessons during the school day through our team of expert itinerant tutors. Whether you want to master a traditional instrument or explore music technology, we provide the path.

  • Instruments offered include: Piano, Drums, Guitar, Bass, Strings, Woodwind, Brass, and Voice.
  • All Levels Welcome: We have groups and lessons tailored for absolute beginners through to advanced NCEA performance level.

The Music Curriculum

Our academic courses provide a solid foundation in the “how” and “why” of music, blending tradition with modern creativity.

  • Year 9 (Core Subject): A high-energy introduction to music where every student explores performance, basic composition, and differentiated theory & music technology.
  • Years 10–13 (Elective): As students progress, the curriculum expands to include advanced music theory, composition, contextual study, performance and Music Technology, preparing students for university-level study or the modern music industry.
