BYOD

We are preparing students to be the next generation of creators, inventors, makers and doers. The modern workforce requires more collaboration, creativity and connectedness than ever before. Bringing your device (BYOD) allows the teaching and learning to move towards students being at the centre of their learning, both at school and at home. Students with devices are better able to explore learning through researching, sharing, publishing, problem-solving and creating new knowledge. Newlands College allows students to bring any wireless-capable device into the college and connect to our network. 

Specifications
  • Price – Prices can range from around $300 to $3000. Buying the most expensive device is generally unnecessary. On the other hand, the cheapest device may end up costing more in the long term, as they may not last as long or may not be suitable for learning.
  • Size of screen – Unfortunately, smartphone screens are not large enough to be able to work efficiently or effectively on many tasks. A device should have a diagonal screen size of at least 7”.
  • Keyboard or tablet? – To be effective for writing tasks, student devices need to have a physical keyboard. This may be a detachable keyboard. iPads are not recommended.
  • Robustness – Your device should be strong enough to survive a fall onto a hard surface.
  • Software – Most learning activities will be based around free Chrome browser-based software.
  • Insurance – While we take care to protect students’ property, Newlands College cannot accept responsibility for lost, stolen or damaged devices, so make sure it is covered for these possibilities.
