Drama

From the competitive stage to the intimacy of our black-box theatre, Drama at Newlands is about more than just acting - it’s about finding your voice, building your confidence, and joining a creative community.

Premier Performance Opportunities

Our students don’t just perform within the school walls; they engage with the wider world of New Zealand theatre through high-profile co-curricular events:

  • SGCNZ Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival: A major highlight where students innovate and perform the works of Shakespeare. Whether it’s a five-minute scene or a fifteen-minute masterpiece, our students consistently shine in this national competition.
  • One-Act Plays: These focused, high-impact productions give students the chance to tackle diverse scripts and hone their stagecraft in a concentrated format.
  • The Wellington Advantage: Being in the cultural capital means we don’t just study theatre – we live it. Whenever opportunities arise, we take students to local and touring production previews and performances in Wellington to see the country’s best professional actors in action.

Behind the Scenes: Technical Crew

For those who prefer the magic of the “shadows,” our drama department offers hands-on experience in the technical side of theatre. Students can lead and support in:

  • Lighting & Sound Design
  • Set Construction & Stage Management
  • Costume & Makeup Artistry
