In Year 9, students explore a range of subjects across all curriculum areas to find out what they enjoy and where their curriculum strengths are. Students begin preparing for the Literacy and Numeracy co-requisite qualifications.

In Year 10, students continue with a range of compulsory core subjects and also have a wide range of optional courses they can select from. Students have their first opportunity to sit the Literacy and Numeracy co-requisites.
In Year 11, students have more opportunity to select from a wider range of courses. Courses begin to specialise, and many courses run as half-year semesters. At Newlands College, we don’t credential NCEA Level 1. We assess students using Newlands College assessments and focus on learning to better prepare students for NCEA Level 2.

In Year 12, students engage in their first year of NCEA with the aim of gaining NCEA Level 2. English is compulsory for students who want to go to university and all other subjects are optional. Courses specialise and students should consider their future pathways when choosing courses.
There is an open choice of subjects a Year 13 student can take. Pre-requisites are set for entry into most courses, and details of these can be found in the Subject Choice Site. In Year 13, students choose five optional subjects from a wider range of specialised subject areas. All students have one study line. The focus for most students is to gain University Entrance. Year 13 is about preparing for the future beyond school.
