The college runs a vibrant and extensive Arts programme. The Visual Arts are based in a purpose built suite of rooms. Painting, printmaking, design and photography are popular options with students. The Performing Arts are well represented in the fields of music and drama. Both of these disciplines are taught as NCEA subjects but they also have substantial co-curricular programmes. Hardly a week goes by without there being a performance of some sort related either to classroom programmes or co-curricular activities.
Filmmaking is a popular activity, which draws upon skills and talents from all the other Arts disciplines. Newlands College students enjoy access to a range of up-to-date digital filmmaking equipment as well as a custom built media studies facility to make short films for the NOSCARS (our annual short film festival), the 48 HOURS filmmaking competition and various other curricular and co-curricular filmmaking productions.
